Pork shoulder is a fantastic cut of meat for slow cooking. When cooked properly, it becomes melt-in-your-mouth tender and can be easily shredded into flavorful, juicy bites. Whether you’re craving BBQ, tacos, or something with a bit more flair, shredded pork shoulder is versatile enough to fit any flavor profile. Here are five super shreddy pork shoulder recipes you can try at home:

  1. Classic Pulled Pork (BBQ Style) You can’t go wrong with a classic pulled pork recipe, especially when paired with a smoky, tangy BBQ sauce. Perfect for sandwiches, sliders, or just on its own, this dish is a crowd-pleaser.
    • Ingredients:
      • 2kg pork shoulder (bone-in or boneless)
      • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
      • 1 tbsp garlic powder
      • 1 tbsp onion powder
      • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
      • 1 tsp salt
      • 1 tsp black pepper
      • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
      • 2 cups BBQ sauce (your favorite brand or homemade)
    • Instructions:
      1. Preheat your oven to 150°C (300°F).
      2. Mix the paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper to form a rub.
      3. Rub the spice mix generously over the pork shoulder.
      4. Place the pork in a roasting pan and pour the apple cider vinegar around it.
      5. Cover with foil and roast in the oven for about 6-8 hours, until the pork is tender and shreds easily with a fork.
      6. Shred the pork, mix with BBQ sauce, and serve on buns or on its own with your favorite sides.
  2. Carnitas (Mexican Pulled Pork) Carnitas is a traditional Mexican dish that is perfect for tacos, burritos, or as a main dish. The pork shoulder is slowly braised in a flavorful broth, making it incredibly tender.
    • Ingredients:
      • 2kg pork shoulder (boneless, cut into large chunks)
      • 1 onion, quartered
      • 4 cloves garlic, smashed
      • 1 orange, halved
      • 1 lime, juiced
      • 2 tsp cumin
      • 2 tsp oregano
      • 1 tsp salt
      • 1 tsp pepper
      • 2 cups chicken broth
    • Instructions:
      1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, add the pork chunks, onion, garlic, orange halves, lime juice, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper.
      2. Pour the chicken broth into the pot and bring to a boil.
      3. Reduce the heat to low and cover. Simmer for 3-4 hours, until the pork is fork-tender.
      4. Shred the pork using two forks, and return it to the pot to soak up the juices.
      5. For crispy carnitas, heat a little oil in a pan and crisp up the shredded pork for 5-10 minutes before serving in tacos, burritos, or on its own.
  3. Asian-Inspired Pulled Pork If you’re craving something with bold, savory flavors, this Asian-inspired pulled pork is a fantastic choice. The combination of soy sauce, ginger, and garlic makes the pork deeply flavorful.
    • Ingredients:
      • 2kg pork shoulder (boneless)
      • 1/4 cup soy sauce
      • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
      • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
      • 1 tbsp brown sugar
      • 4 cloves garlic, minced
      • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
      • 2 cups chicken broth
      • Green onions, for garnish
    • Instructions:
      1. Combine the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, garlic, and ginger in a bowl to create the marinade.
      2. Place the pork shoulder in a slow cooker or Dutch oven and pour the marinade over the pork.
      3. Add chicken broth to the pot and cook on low for 6-8 hours (or in the oven at 150°C for 4-5 hours).
      4. Shred the pork with a fork, mixing it into the sauce. Garnish with chopped green onions.
      5. Serve the shredded pork over rice, in bao buns, or as part of an Asian-inspired lettuce wrap.
  4. Jamaican Jerk Pulled Pork For a vibrant, spicy twist on shredded pork, try this Jamaican jerk pulled pork recipe. The combination of warm spices and a bit of heat will tantalize your taste buds.
    • Ingredients:
      • 2kg pork shoulder (boneless)

      • 2 tbsp brown sugar
      • 1 tbsp thyme (fresh or dried)
      • 2 tsp allspice
      • 1 tsp cinnamon

      • 1-2 scotch bonnet peppers, finely chopped (or other hot pepper)
      • 1 onion, chopped
      • 3 cloves garlic, minced
      • 1 tbsp lime juice
    • Instructions:
      1. In a bowl, mix together the soy sauce, brown sugar, thyme, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, chopped scotch bonnet pepper, onion, garlic, and lime juice.
      2. Rub this mixture all over the pork shoulder and marinate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
      3. Slow cook the pork in a Dutch oven or slow cooker on low for 6-8 hours until tender and easily shredded.
      4. Shred the pork and serve with rice, on a sandwich, or in tacos for a spicy, flavorful dish.
  5. Apple Cider Braised Pork Shoulder For a comforting and slightly sweet option, braise your pork shoulder with apple cider and herbs. The result is a flavorful, tender pork that pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables.
    • Ingredients:
      • 2kg pork shoulder (bone-in or boneless)
      • 2 cups apple cider
      • 1 onion, chopped
      • 4 cloves garlic, minced
      • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
      • 1 tbsp thyme (fresh or dried)
      • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • Instructions:
      1. Preheat your oven to 160°C (325°F).
      2. In a large Dutch oven, heat oil over medium-high heat. Season the pork shoulder with salt and pepper and brown on all sides.
      3. Add the onion and garlic to the pot and sauté for a few minutes until softened.
      4. Stir in the apple cider, Dijon mustard, and thyme. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
      5. Cover the pot and transfer it to the oven. Braise the pork for 3-4 hours, until it’s fork-tender and easily shreds.
      6. Shred the pork and mix it with the braising liquid for extra flavor. Serve with mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables.
