5 Ways to Use Mushrooms

Mushrooms are a versatile and nutritious ingredient that can be used in a variety of dishes. Whether you enjoy them raw, sautéed, or blended into a rich sauce, mushrooms add depth and umami flavor to your meals. Here are five delicious ways to use mushrooms in your cooking.

1. Mushroom Stir-Fry

A quick and easy way to enjoy mushrooms is in a stir-fry. They absorb flavors well and pair perfectly with a variety of vegetables and proteins.

Ingredients:

  • 250 g mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Add garlic and ginger, sautéing until fragrant.
  3. Toss in the mushrooms, bell pepper, and onion. Stir-fry for 5 minutes.
  4. Pour in soy sauce and sesame oil, mixing well.
  5. Cook for another 2–3 minutes, then sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  6. Serve hot with rice or noodles.

2. Creamy Mushroom Soup

A comforting and hearty dish, mushroom soup is perfect for a chilly day.

Ingredients:

  • 300 g mushrooms, chopped
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 500 ml vegetable broth
  • 250 ml heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Melt butter in a pot over medium heat and sauté the onion and garlic until soft.
  2. Add mushrooms and cook until they release their juices.
  3. Pour in vegetable broth and bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. Blend the soup until smooth, then stir in heavy cream and thyme.
  6. Season with salt and black pepper, then serve warm.

3. Mushroom Risotto

This classic Italian dish showcases the earthy flavors of mushrooms in a creamy, rich risotto.

Ingredients:

  • 300 g mushrooms, sliced
  • 200 g Arborio rice
  • 750 ml vegetable broth
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 100 ml white wine
  • 50 g Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a pan and sauté onion and garlic until soft.
  2. Add mushrooms and cook until tender.
  3. Stir in Arborio rice and cook for 1–2 minutes.
  4. Pour in white wine and let it evaporate.
  5. Gradually add vegetable broth, stirring frequently, until the rice is cooked and creamy.
  6. Stir in butter and Parmesan cheese.
  7. Season with salt and black pepper, then serve immediately.

4. Stuffed Mushrooms

A great appetizer or side dish, stuffed mushrooms are flavorful and easy to prepare.

Ingredients:

  • 10 large mushrooms, stems removed
  • 100 g cream cheese
  • 50 g Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  2. Mix cream cheese, Parmesan, garlic, parsley, salt, and black pepper in a bowl.
  3. Fill each mushroom cap with the cheese mixture.
  4. Place on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, and bake for 15–20 minutes.
  5. Serve warm as an appetizer or side dish.

5. Mushroom Pasta

A simple yet delicious pasta dish that highlights the natural flavor of mushrooms.

Ingredients:

  • 300 g pasta (spaghetti or fettuccine)
  • 250 g mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 200 ml heavy cream
  • 50 g Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Cook pasta according to package instructions.
  2. In a pan, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat.
  3. Add garlic and mushrooms, cooking until tender.
  4. Pour in heavy cream and oregano, stirring well.
  5. Add the cooked pasta and Parmesan cheese, mixing thoroughly.
  6. Season with salt and black pepper, then serve immediately.
