Tiramisu Recipe with a Twist

Tiramisu is a timeless Italian dessert loved for its layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers, creamy mascarpone, and dusting of cocoa powder. But if you’re looking to put a fun and unexpected spin on this classic, this tiramisu recipe with a twist is the perfect way to impress your guests or satisfy your sweet tooth with something new.

This version keeps the creamy, dreamy texture that makes tiramisu irresistible but adds a zesty citrus kick and a touch of white chocolate for an exciting flavor combination.

Ingredients

  • 250g mascarpone cheese
  • 300ml double cream
  • 3 tablespoons icing sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 200g ladyfinger biscuits (savoiardi)
  • 250ml strong brewed coffee (cooled)
  • Zest of 1 orange (plus extra for garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons orange liqueur (such as Cointreau) – optional
  • 50g white chocolate, grated
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder (for dusting)

Method

  1. Make the Creamy Filling:
In a large mixing bowl, beat the mascarpone, double cream, icing sugar, and vanilla extract together until thick and smooth. Gently fold in the orange zest and half of the grated white chocolate. This gives the filling a bright, citrusy lift while the white chocolate adds extra richness.
  2. Prepare the Coffee Mixture:
In a shallow bowl, combine the cooled brewed coffee with the orange liqueur (if using). The coffee gives depth while the orange liqueur complements the zest already in the cream.
  3. Assemble the Tiramisu:
Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture—don’t let them soak too long or they’ll become soggy. Arrange a layer of dipped biscuits in the bottom of your serving dish or glasses.
  4. Layer Up:
Spread a generous layer of the mascarpone cream mixture over the ladyfingers. Sprinkle a bit of the remaining white chocolate on top. Repeat the layers until you run out of ingredients, finishing with a layer of cream.
  5. Chill:
Refrigerate the tiramisu for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. This allows the flavors to meld and the dessert to set beautifully.
  6. Finish and Serve:
Just before serving, dust the top with cocoa powder and garnish with extra orange zest for a fresh, colorful finish.

Why This Twist Works

The addition of orange zest and liqueur cuts through the richness of the mascarpone and cream, bringing a burst of freshness. The white chocolate adds sweetness and a creamy texture that complements the traditional coffee flavors without overpowering them.

Serving Suggestions

Serve your tiramisu in individual glasses for an elegant dinner party presentation, or layer it in a large dish for family-style serving. Either way, this tiramisu with a twist is sure to get rave reviews.

Feel free to experiment with other flavors—lemon zest, a splash of amaretto, or even a hint of cinnamon for an autumnal version. With this simple twist, you’ll breathe new life into a much-loved dessert while keeping the essence of classic tiramisu intact.
