How to Make Shakshuka at Home

Shakshuka is a flavorful and comforting Middle Eastern dish consisting of poached eggs in a spicy tomato sauce. It’s an ideal breakfast, brunch, or even dinner, and it’s easy to make with just a few key ingredients. If you’re looking to add something new to your meal rotation, shakshuka is a must-try. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make shakshuka at home.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
  • 1 can (400g) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4–6 large eggs
  • Fresh herbs (parsley or cilantro), chopped for garnish
  • Crumbled feta or goat cheese (optional)
  • Warm pita or crusty bread, for serving

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cook the Vegetables
Heat olive oil in a large, deep skillet or a cast-iron pan over medium heat. Add the diced onion and bell pepper, cooking for about 5–7 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized.

2. Add the Garlic and Spices
Stir in the minced garlic, cumin, paprika, turmeric, and chili flakes (if using). Cook for another minute until the spices become fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.

3. Prepare the Tomato Sauce
Add the diced tomatoes and tomato paste to the pan. Stir well and let the mixture simmer for 10–15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

4. Poach the Eggs
Make small wells in the tomato sauce using a spoon. Crack the eggs into each well, being careful not to break the yolks. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for 5–7 minutes, or until the egg whites are set, but the yolks are still runny. For firmer eggs, cook for a few extra minutes.

5. Garnish and Serve
Once the eggs are cooked to your liking, remove the pan from the heat. Garnish with fresh herbs and optional crumbled cheese for added richness. Serve shakshuka hot with warm pita or crusty bread for dipping.

Tips for Success

  • If you prefer a spicier shakshuka, add more chili flakes or a chopped fresh chili.
  • For a richer sauce, you can add a little bit of heavy cream or coconut milk.
  • Shakshuka can be customized with additional ingredients like olives, spinach, or feta cheese.
  • If you don’t have a lid, cover the pan with aluminum foil to trap the heat and steam the eggs.

Serving Suggestions
Shakshuka is perfect for serving with crusty bread or pita to soak up the flavorful sauce. You can also enjoy it with a side of fresh salad or roasted vegetables for a more complete meal.

Enjoy Your Homemade Shakshuka
Making shakshuka at home is easy, satisfying, and customizable to your tastes. This dish is packed with vibrant flavors and makes for a hearty, nutritious meal that’s perfect for any time of day. Enjoy your homemade shakshuka with friends or family, and savor the warmth and richness it brings.
