How to Make the Perfect Flat White

The flat white is a popular coffee beverage that originated in Australia and New Zealand. Known for its smooth texture and rich flavor, a flat white is made with a shot of espresso and velvety steamed milk, resulting in a balanced, creamy drink. Achieving the perfect flat white requires attention to detail and a bit of practice. Here’s a comprehensive guide to making the perfect flat white at home.

Ingredients

  • Freshly ground coffee beans
  • Fresh whole milk

Equipment

  • Espresso machine
  • Coffee grinder
  • Milk frother or steam wand
  • Coffee scale (optional)
  • Thermometer (optional)
  • Milk pitcher
  • Coffee cup (ideally 5-6 ounces)

Instructions

Prepare the Espresso

    • Grind the Coffee Beans: Use freshly roasted coffee beans for the best flavor. Grind the beans to a fine consistency suitable for espresso.
    • Measure the Coffee: Use a coffee scale to measure about 18-20 grams of coffee for a double shot of espresso.
    • Tamp the Coffee: Distribute the ground coffee evenly in the portafilter and tamp it firmly to create a level surface.
    • Brew the Espresso: Insert the portafilter into the espresso machine and brew a double shot of espresso (about 2 ounces). Aim for a brewing time of around 25-30 seconds to extract the optimal flavor.

    Steam the Milk

      • Choose Whole Milk: Whole milk creates the best texture and creaminess for a flat white, but you can use alternative milks like oat or almond if preferred.
      • Pour the Milk: Pour about 4-6 ounces of cold milk into a milk pitcher.
      • Steam the Milk: Position the steam wand just below the surface of the milk and turn it on. This will create microfoam by introducing tiny air bubbles into the milk. Keep the steam wand slightly tilted to create a whirlpool effect, which helps incorporate the air evenly.
      • Heat the Milk: Continue steaming until the milk reaches a temperature of around 60-65°C (140-150°F). Use a thermometer to check the temperature if you’re unsure. The milk should be hot to the touch but not scalding.
      • Achieve the Microfoam: The goal is to achieve a silky, velvety microfoam with no large bubbles. The texture should be smooth and creamy.

      Pour the Flat White

        • Tap and Swirl: Gently tap the milk pitcher on a counter to pop any large bubbles, and swirl it to ensure the milk and foam are well integrated.
        • Pour the Milk: Start by pouring the milk slowly into the center of the espresso. As the cup fills, bring the pitcher closer and pour with a steady hand to create a smooth layer of microfoam on top.
        • Create Latte Art (Optional): With practice, you can try creating latte art by controlling the pour to shape designs like hearts or leaves.

Tips for the Perfect Flat White

        • Fresh Ingredients: Use freshly roasted coffee beans and whole milk for the best flavor and texture.
        • Proper Steaming: Focus on creating a silky microfoam. Practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if it takes a few tries to get it right.
        • Temperature Control: Avoid overheating the milk, as it can burn and lose its sweetness. Aim for the ideal temperature range.
        • Consistent Pouring: A steady and controlled pour ensures that the milk integrates well with the espresso, creating a smooth and balanced drink.

The flat white is a delightful coffee drink that combines the boldness of espresso with the creamy smoothness of steamed milk. By following these steps and practicing your technique, you can make the perfect flat white at home. Whether you enjoy it as a morning pick-me-up or an afternoon treat, mastering the flat white will elevate your coffee experience and impress your friends and family.
