There’s something undeniably satisfying about the crusty exterior and airy interior of a freshly baked baguette. This iconic French bread is a staple in bakeries and an absolute delight to make at home. If you’re ready to embark on a baking adventure and create your own homemade baguettes, we have a tried-and-true recipe for you. Get ready to embrace the art of bread-making and enjoy the incredible taste and texture of these classic loaves.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (around 110°F/43°C)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm water and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. This step ensures that the yeast is active and ready to leaven the dough.
  2. Mix the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon or your hands until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough:
Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 10-15 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Kneading develops the gluten and gives the baguettes their characteristic texture. Add more flour if the dough is too sticky, but be cautious not to add too much, as it can result in dense baguettes.
  4. First Rise:
Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl, turning it to coat all sides with oil. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1 ½ hours or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape the Baguettes:
Once the dough has risen, gently deflate it and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal portions. Take one portion and shape it into a rectangle, then fold the sides towards the center and roll it tightly from one end to the other to form a baguette shape. Repeat with the second portion.
  6. Second Rise:
Place the shaped baguettes onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Leave enough space between them for expansion. Cover the baguettes with a towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes or until they have puffed up.
  7. Preheat and Score:
Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) while the baguettes are rising. Once the second rise is complete, use a sharp knife or a razor blade to score the tops of the baguettes with diagonal slashes. This helps the dough expand and creates the classic baguette appearance.
  8. Bake:
Place the baking sheet with the baguettes in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 20-25 minutes or until the crust turns golden brown and crispy. To achieve a crustier baguette, you can also place a baking pan with water on the bottom rack of the oven to create steam.
  9. Cool and Enjoy:
Remove the baguettes from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for at least 15-20 minutes before slicing. This allows the baguettes to set and develop their characteristic crunch. Serve the homemade baguettes warm or at room temperature, and enjoy them with butter, cheese, or your favorite fillings.

With this classic recipe for homemade baguettes, you’re well on your way to baking authentic French loaves that will impress family and friends. The process of making baguettes requires patience and practice, but the results are worth it. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your ingredients, and let the aroma of freshly baked bread fill your kitchen. Embrace the art of bread-making and indulge in the pleasure of homemade baguettes. Bon appétit!
