Sasko, one of South Africa’s leading bread producers, has temporarily halted production at one of its facilities after a shocking incident involving a rat found in a loaf of bread. The discovery was made by KwaZulu-Natal consumer Ms. Nombulelo Mkumla, who brought the incident to the company’s attention, sparking immediate concern and a comprehensive investigation.

“We were shocked and devastated when a KZN consumer informed us that she found a rodent in her loaf of Sasko bread,” the company said in a statement. “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience or discomfort that this incident caused Ms. Nombulelo Mkumla as well as any of our other loyal consumers.”

Sasko emphasized that the health and wellbeing of its consumers are of utmost importance. Upon receiving the complaint, the company launched an investigation, which included bringing in external third-party service providers to thoroughly inspect the facility where the bread was produced.

“As part of our strict safety protocols, we continuously monitor and inspect our facilities and production batches for compliance with all food safety regulations, to ensure that only products of the highest quality leave our facilities,” Sasko stated.

So far, the investigation has not revealed any evidence of a rodent infestation or any other signs of a breach in their food safety and quality control measures. Sasko noted that they have not received any similar complaints from other consumers, suggesting that this was an “extreme and isolated, yet very unfortunate incident.”

Nevertheless, as a precautionary measure, Sasko has made the decision to suspend bread production at the affected facility until the investigation is complete. “We want to ensure that there is absolutely no risk to our consumers before resuming operations,” the company said.

Sasko reiterated its commitment to food safety and quality, emphasizing that any concerns from consumers will be handled with the utmost seriousness. The company has provided a consumer care hotline for anyone who might have concerns regarding affected products: 0800 212 360 or via email at consumercare@pioneerfoods.co.za.

“We appreciate the understanding and support of our consumers as we work diligently to close this issue. Our commitment to quality and safety remains unwavering.”

The temporary suspension of bread production is a significant step by Sasko to reassure its consumers of their dedication to providing safe, high-quality products, as the investigation continues.
