Smeg, renowned for its world-famous retro fridges, has joined forces with the prestigious fashion house Dolce&Gabbana to create a collection of extraordinary art fridges. This collaboration has resulted in an exclusive collector’s edition comprising 100 one-of-a-kind fridges that are true works of art and coveted treasures.
Dolce&Gabbana, revered as the pioneers of Mediterranean haute couture, have always paid homage to their Italian heritage, particularly their deep connection to Sicily, their beloved birthplace. This powerful partnership takes their signature style and love for their country to new heights by transforming Smeg’s iconic FAB28 retro refrigerator into a canvas for artistic expression.
The collection showcases 100 art fridges, each skillfully hand-painted by renowned Sicilian artists specially commissioned by Dolce&Gabbana themselves. These visually stunning pieces are adorned in the ornate and colorful style reminiscent of the traditional Sicilian cart. The Sicilian cart, known for its role as a wandering picture book that combines function with storytelling, is one of the most celebrated symbols of the island’s rich tradition and folklore.
Each art fridge unfolds a unique story, featuring poetic theatre scenes, medieval knights, boats sailing into the Mediterranean sunset, vibrant majolica patterns, captivating floral motifs, and enchanting landscapes. Every piece is meticulously embellished with intricate detailing and vibrant depictions that reflect the distinct regions of the individual artists. Once the artwork is completed, it undergoes a meticulous treatment with a specialized glazed coating, ensuring the preservation of the art itself.
United by their shared values and the tradition of “Made in Italy” excellence, Smeg and Dolce&Gabbana have masterfully blended different eras, specialties, and sensibilities to create an unparalleled fusion of art and functionality that leaves a lasting impression.
“These art fridges are truly perfect collector’s pieces,” anticipates Stefano Gabbana, in preparation for their original debut at Salone del Mobile in Milan. “Despite our companies operating in different sectors, there are undeniable similarities, such as our passion for creativity and innovation, attention to quality and details, and, of course, our deep love for Italy and its products.”
Out of the 100 exclusive art fridges worldwide, only two pieces will be available in South Africa
