Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Measure the Couscous
Start by measuring out the couscous. A 1:1 ratio of couscous to liquid is typically used, but you can adjust this slightly based on personal preference.

2. Boil the Liquid
In a medium saucepan, bring water or broth to a boil. Add salt and olive oil or butter for flavor. Using broth instead of water adds a richer taste.

3. Add the Couscous
Once the liquid reaches a rolling boil, remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the couscous, ensuring all grains are submerged. Cover the pot tightly with a lid and let it sit for 5 minutes.

4. Fluff the Couscous
After 5 minutes, remove the lid and use a fork to fluff the couscous gently. This separates the grains and gives the couscous its signature light and fluffy texture.

5. Customize the Dish
At this point, you can add your chosen mix-ins. Toss in fresh herbs for brightness, toasted nuts for crunch, dried fruits for sweetness, or spices to enhance the flavor. Adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper as needed.

  • Avoid overcooking by using the correct liquid-to-couscous ratio.
  • For a more aromatic dish, toast the couscous lightly in a dry pan before adding it to the boiling liquid.
