Booking restaurants in South Africa just got easier with AI in Search

Planning a night out, a weekend treat, or a dinner with friends just got much easier for diners across South Africa. Google has expanded AI capabilities in Search to help users find restaurants and confirm bookings in just a few simple steps.

With the introduction of new agentic features in AI Mode, users in South Africa can now use everyday language to find and secure restaurant reservations directly through Google Search. Whether it’s a last-minute dinner or a special occasion, AI Mode helps streamline the process from discovery to booking – all within the Search experience.

“South Africa has an incredible variety of restaurants and food experiences. We’re seeing more people turn to Google Search with specific questions that reflect their personal tastes, requirements and preferences,” said Kabelo Makwane, Country Director at Google South Africa.

“By bringing AI-driven capabilities to Search, we’re helping diners find exactly what they’re craving and book a table quickly and seamlessly. It’s a small but powerful way technology can make everyday decisions easier, while also helping restaurateurs connect with customers who are ready to book.”

Turning cravings into bookings

Search data shows that South African diners are becoming more intentional in how they discover and plan their meals out. Globally, Google has seen restaurant-related searches grow significantly, with hyper-specific queries reflecting personal tastes, group sizes, and dietary needs increasingly replacing generic searches. South Africa is no exception.

With AI Mode, users can describe exactly what they want in the Search bar, including cuisine, location, date, and preferences. For example:

  • “Find a table for two at a dog-friendly Italian restaurant in Cape Town for Saturday at 7pm.”
  • “Find me a sushi spot in Sandton that has a table for four for dinner tonight.”
  • “Find a Banting-friendly restaurant in Umhlanga with availability at 1pm. Must have a sea view.”

Real-time results across trusted partners

AI Mode searches across multiple booking platforms and websites to find real-time availability that matches user preferences. It then presents a curated list of options, including direct links to book instantly via trusted local and global partners such as Dineplan, ResDiary, SevenRooms, and TheFork.

“With these updates, we’re using AI to do more of the work on your behalf,” added Makwane. “It means less time comparing options and more time enjoying South Africa’s incredible restaurant scene.”

From discovering hidden gems to securing last-minute tables, AI Mode brings together the best of Search and generative AI, making dining out simpler, smarter, and more personal for everyone.
