In our fast-paced lives, finding time to sit down and enjoy a proper meal can often be a challenge. This is especially true when you’re constantly on the go, rushing from one place to another. However, just because you’re busy doesn’t mean you have to compromise on your health and nutrition. South Africa, a vibrant and diverse country, offers a variety of delicious and healthy snacks that are perfect for those who need a quick bite while on the move. Let’s explore some South African-style snacks that will keep you fuelled and satisfied throughout the day.

  1. Biltong: Biltong is a popular South African snack that is similar to beef jerky but with its own unique twist. It is made by air-drying thin strips of seasoned meat, usually beef or game, resulting in a delicious, high-protein snack. Biltong is low in fat and carbs, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to incorporate more protein into their diet. It comes in various flavours like original, peri-peri, and garlic, providing a wide range of options to suit your taste buds.
  2. Boerewors Rolls: Boerewors is a traditional South African sausage made from a blend of meats and spices. It’s often enjoyed at braais (South African barbecues) but can also be served as a snack on the go. A boerewors roll consists of a juicy, grilled sausage served in a fresh roll or a wrap. To make it a healthier option, choose whole wheat or seeded rolls and pair it with a side of fresh salad or sliced vegetables. The combination of protein from the sausage and fiber from the roll and veggies will keep you satisfied for longer.
  3. Droëwors: Droëwors, meaning “dry sausage” in Afrikaans, is another popular South African snack that is perfect for snacking on the go. It is made using a similar method to biltong but is smaller and typically spiced with coriander and other flavourful seasonings. Droëwors is a great source of protein and can be enjoyed as a standalone snack or paired with fresh fruit or nuts for a balanced and energizing combination.
  4. Samoosas: Samoosas, also known as samoosas or samosas, have their origins in Indian cuisine but have become a beloved snack in South Africa. These triangular pastries are filled with various fillings, such as spiced potatoes, meat, or vegetables. While traditional samoosas are deep-fried, you can opt for healthier versions by baking them instead. Choose vegetable fillings like spinach or lentils for a nutritious twist and enjoy them with a side of chutney or yogurt for added flavour.
  5. Rooibos Tea: While not a snack in itself, Rooibos tea is a quintessential South African beverage that complements any on-the-go snack. Rooibos is a herbal tea that is naturally caffeine-free and rich in antioxidants. It has a smooth and slightly sweet flavour, making it a refreshing and hydrating option. Carry a bottle of chilled Rooibos tea with you as you go about your day and sip on it alongside your favourite South African-style snacks.

When it comes to healthy snacks on the go, South Africa offers a wide range of options that are both delicious and nutritious. Whether you prefer savoury or sweet, protein-packed or fibre-rich, there’s something to suit every taste and dietary preference. So, the next time you find yourself rushing from one place to another, remember to pack some South African-style snacks and enjoy a taste of the rainbow nation while nourishing your body.
