Homemade Tzatziki Recipe

Tzatziki is a classic Greek sauce made from yogurt, cucumber, garlic, olive oil, and herbs. It is creamy, refreshing, and versatile, often served as a dip, spread, or accompaniment to grilled meats and vegetables. Making tzatziki at home is simple, and when done right, it tastes fresher and more vibrant than store-bought versions.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium cucumber
  • 250 g Greek yogurt (full-fat for creaminess)
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill or mint, finely chopped
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cucumber
Peel the cucumber, then grate it using the large holes of a grater. Place the grated cucumber in a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. This prevents the tzatziki from becoming watery.

Step 2: Combine the Base
In a mixing bowl, add Greek yogurt, minced garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice. Stir until smooth and well combined.

Step 3: Add Cucumber and Herbs
Fold in the grated cucumber and fresh dill or mint. Mix gently to evenly distribute the ingredients.

Step 4: Season
Add salt and black pepper to taste. Start with a small amount, then adjust based on your preference.

Step 5: Chill and Serve
Cover the bowl and refrigerate the tzatziki for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together.

Tips for the Best Tzatziki

  • Strain the Yogurt: If your yogurt is thin, strain it through cheesecloth for a few hours to achieve a thicker consistency.
  • Cucumber Prep: Always remove excess water from cucumber, or the dip will turn runny.
  • Garlic Strength: Fresh garlic packs a punch, so adjust the amount based on your taste.
  • Herb Choice: Dill is traditional, but mint gives a lighter, fresher flavor. You can also combine both.
  • Serving Temperature: Serve cold for the most refreshing taste.

How to Serve Tzatziki

  • As a dip for pita bread, vegetable sticks, or chips
  • As a sauce for grilled chicken, lamb, or beef kebabs
  • With falafel, gyros, or shawarma
  • Spread inside wraps and sandwiches
  • As a side to roasted vegetables or baked potatoes

Variations

  • Spicy Tzatziki: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chopped chili for heat.
  • Vegan Tzatziki: Substitute Greek yogurt with coconut yogurt or soy yogurt.
  • Herb-Rich Tzatziki: Add parsley and chives for a more herbal flavor.

Homemade tzatziki is easy to prepare, cost-effective, and far more flavorful than pre-packaged versions. With just a few fresh ingredients, you can create a creamy, tangy dip that pairs beautifully with countless dishes. Whether you use it as a dip, sauce, or spread, this refreshing recipe is one you will want to keep in regular rotation.
