How to Make Gatsby the South African Way

Originating from the vibrant streets of Cape Town, South Africa, the Gatsby sandwich has become a beloved icon of South African cuisine. Named after F. Ingredients:

2. Cook the Steak:

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Season the steak with salt and pepper, then add it to the skillet.
  • Cook the steak until it’s browned and cooked to your desired level of doneness.
  • Remove the steak from the skillet and set it aside.

3. Saute the Onions:

  • In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions.

  • Begin by layering the cooked steak inside the sliced bread, followed by the sautéed onions.
  • Next, add a layer of sliced tomatoes, followed by the hot chips (French fries).
  • Top the chips with shredded lettuce, and drizzle your choice of condiments over the fillings.

5. Serve and Enjoy:

  • Once assembled, close the Gatsby sandwich, pressing it gently to ensure all the fillings are contained within.
  • Use a sharp knife to slice the Gatsby into individual portions.
  • Serve immediately while the bread is still warm and the fillings are fresh.
