When it comes to iconic South African cuisine, Spur Steak Ranches holds a special place in the hearts of many. Among its tantalizing offerings, Spur’s Buffalo Wings stand out as a beloved appetizer that satisfies cravings with every bite. If you’ve ever wondered how to recreate this flavorful dish at home, you’re in luck. Let’s dive into the art of making Spur’s Buffalo Wings—the South African way.

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg chicken wings, split into flats and drumettes
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup Spur’s Original & Spicy Buffalo Wing Sauce (available at select retailers)
  • Ranch dressing or blue cheese dressing, for serving
  • Celery sticks and carrot sticks, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Chicken Wings: Rinse the chicken wings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. This helps ensure crispy wings once fried.
  2. Coat the Wings: In a shallow bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Dredge each chicken wing in the seasoned flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
  3. Heat the Oil: In a deep fryer or large pot, heat vegetable oil to 180°C (350°F). Make sure there’s enough oil to fully submerge the chicken wings.
  4. Fry the Wings: Carefully add the coated chicken wings to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the fryer. Fry for about 10-12 minutes, or until the wings are golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Drain and Toss: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fried wings to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Allow them to cool slightly before tossing them in Spur’s Original & Spicy Buffalo Wing Sauce until evenly coated.
  6. Serve: Arrange the Buffalo wings on a serving platter and garnish with celery sticks and carrot sticks. Serve with a side of ranch dressing or blue cheese dressing for dipping.
  7. Enjoy: Dive into the irresistible flavors of Spur’s Buffalo Wings—the crispy exterior giving way to juicy, tender chicken, coated in tangy and spicy buffalo sauce. It’s a taste sensation that’s sure to delight your taste buds and transport you to your favorite Spur restaurant.

Tips:

  • Adjust the amount of buffalo wing sauce according to your preference for heat. You can also mix Spur’s Original & Spicy Buffalo Wing Sauce with a bit of melted butter for a milder flavor.
  • Serve the Buffalo wings immediately after tossing them in the sauce to ensure they stay crispy.
  • For a traditional South African touch, enjoy your Buffalo wings with a side of crispy chips (fries) or onion rings.

Whether you’re hosting a casual gathering with friends or simply craving a taste of South Africa, mastering Spur’s Buffalo Wings at home is a delicious endeavor worth undertaking. With simple ingredients and easy-to-follow steps, you can enjoy the bold flavors of this South African favorite whenever the craving strikes. So, gather your ingredients, get frying, and savor the taste of Spur’s Buffalo Wings—the South African way!
