Level Up Your Lunch With The Ultimate Steak Sandwich Recipe You Didn’t Know You Needed

If you’re looking to take a break from the usual chicken mayo or ham and cheese sandwich, a steak sandwich is the perfect way to elevate your lunch or dinner. Juicy, savoury, and incredibly satisfying, a well-made steak sandwich hits all the right notes—comforting, bold, and full of flavour. Whether you’re meal prepping or craving something different, this recipe is a sure-fire way to switch things up.

A steak sandwich combines the richness of seared beef with the crunch of toasted bread and the tang of a good sauce. It’s ideal for using up leftover steak or for creating a special meal without spending hours in the kitchen. Best of all, you can customise it endlessly with different cheeses, greens, and spreads.

Ingredients (Serves 2)

  • 300 g sirloin or rump steak
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 crusty sandwich rolls or ciabatta loaves
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise
  • A handful of fresh rocket (arugula)
  • Optional: sliced cheese (cheddar, provolone, or Swiss)

Instructions

1. Cook the Steak
Let the steak sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes. Season generously with salt and pepper.

Heat olive oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Sear the steak for 2–3 minutes per side for medium-rare, or longer depending on your preferred doneness. Transfer to a plate and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing thinly against the grain.

2. Caramelise the Onions
In the same pan, add butter and sliced red onions. Cook on medium heat for about 8 minutes until soft and golden. Add the balsamic vinegar and cook for another minute. Remove from heat.

3. Toast the Bread
Cut the rolls in half and toast them in the oven or on a dry pan until lightly crispy.

4. Build Your Sandwich
Spread Dijon mustard on one side of the roll and mayonnaise on the other. Layer with rocket, steak slices, caramelised onions, and cheese (if using).

5. Serve Warm
Serve immediately while the sandwich is warm and melty. Pair it with sweet potato fries, a side salad, or kettle-cooked crisps.

Customise Your Steak Sandwich

  • Add heat: Spread chilli jam or add sliced jalapeños for a spicy kick.
  • Go gourmet: Use blue cheese, roasted red peppers, or truffle aioli.
  • Make it cheesy: Melt cheese directly onto the bread under the grill for added gooeyness.
  • Swap the greens: Try baby spinach, watercress, or crispy lettuce for a different bite.

Sometimes, all it takes to transform your lunch or dinner routine is a bold new idea—and a steak sandwich delivers just that. With a balance of textures, savoury flavours, and easy customisation, it’s the perfect choice when you’re craving something hearty and indulgent.

Ready to switch your sandwich up? This steak sandwich recipe is the upgrade you’ve been waiting for.
