Quick Cottage Pie Recipe

Cottage pie is a classic comfort food made with a savory meat filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes. Traditional recipes can take time, but this quick version delivers rich flavor in under an hour, making it perfect for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 100 grams frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 200 milliliters beef stock
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the topping:

  • 500 grams potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 50 grams butter
  • 60 milliliters milk
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with butter and milk until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

2. Cook the Filling
While the potatoes cook, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Remove excess fat. Add onion, garlic, and carrots. Cook for 5–7 minutes until softened.

3. Add Flavors
Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and beef stock. Simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken. Add frozen peas in the last few minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

4. Assemble the Pie
Preheat the oven to 200°C. Spread the meat filling evenly in a baking dish. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top and smooth the surface with a spatula or fork to create small ridges that brown nicely.

5. Bake
Place the dish in the oven for 20 minutes, or until the mashed potato topping is lightly golden. For extra crispiness, you can switch the oven to grill for the last 2–3 minutes.

6. Serve
Let the cottage pie rest for 5 minutes before serving. Pair it with a side salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use starchy potatoes like Maris Piper or Russet for creamier mash.
  • For richer flavor, add a teaspoon of mustard or a splash of soy sauce to the meat filling.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven or microwave without losing texture.

This quick cottage pie is hearty, flavorful, and easy to make. With simple ingredients and minimal prep time, it delivers the warmth of traditional comfort food in a fraction of the time.
