Focaccia bread, with its soft and pillowy texture, aromatic herbs, and savory flavors, is a beloved Italian bread that can elevate any meal or be enjoyed on its own. Whether you’re hosting a gathering or simply looking for a delightful bread to accompany your meals, homemade focaccia is a fantastic choice. In this article, we’ll guide you through a simple yet delicious recipe that will help you create a fragrant and flavorful loaf of homemade focaccia bread.

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water

For the topping:

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary leaves
  • Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
  • Optional: additional toppings like cherry tomatoes, olives, or caramelized onions

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the olive oil and warm water. Mix well until the dough comes together.
  2. Knead the Dough:
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment for this step.
  3. First Rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
  4. Shape the Dough:
Once the dough has risen, transfer it to a greased baking pan or sheet. Gently press and stretch the dough to fit the shape of the pan. It should be about 1 inch thick.
  5. Second Rise:
Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes. This will help create those signature airy pockets in the bread.
  6. Preheat the Oven:
While the dough is rising, preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  7. Add Toppings:
After the second rise, use your fingers to create dimples all over the surface of the dough. Drizzle the olive oil evenly over the dough and sprinkle with fresh rosemary leaves and coarse sea salt. If desired, add additional toppings like cherry tomatoes, olives, or caramelized onions.
  8. Bake the Focaccia:
Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Keep an eye on it to prevent over-browning.
  9. Cool and Serve:
Once baked, remove the focaccia from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Slice and serve it warm or at room temperature. Focaccia is excellent on its own, served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping, or used as a base for sandwiches.

Enjoy the delightful experience of homemade focaccia bread with its soft and chewy texture, fragrant herbs, and satisfying flavors. This versatile bread can be served as an appetizer, a side dish, or a star of the meal. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of patience, you can create a wonderful loaf of homemade focaccia that will impress your family and friends. So roll up your sleeves, gather your ingredients, and embark on a delicious baking journey that will transport you to the sunny shores of Italy.
