Sugar cookies are a timeless and versatile treat that brings joy to any occasion. With their delicate texture, buttery flavor, and ability to be shaped into various forms, sugar cookies are a beloved favorite for holidays, parties, or simple indulgence. In this article, we will share a delightful recipe for classic sugar cookies that are perfect for decorating and sharing with loved ones.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Optional:

  • Royal icing
  • Food coloring
  • Sprinkles or decorations

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prepare:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
  2. Cream the Butter and Sugar:
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. You can use an electric mixer or mix by hand using a wooden spoon.
  3. Add Egg and Vanilla:
Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined. Ensure the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter and sugar mixture, mixing until just combined. Avoid overmixing to prevent tough cookies.
  5. Chill the Dough:
Wrap the cookie dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Chilling the dough helps it firm up and makes it easier to roll and cut into shapes.
  6. Roll and Cut:
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. Use cookie cutters of your choice to cut out shapes. Place the cut-out cookies onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each.
  7. Bake to Perfection:
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges of the cookies start to turn golden brown. The center may appear slightly soft but will firm up as the cookies cool.
  8. Decorate and Enjoy:
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, you can decorate the cookies with royal icing, food coloring, and sprinkles to add your personal touch.

Sugar cookies are a delightful and versatile treat that can be enjoyed throughout the year. With this classic sugar cookie recipe, you can create buttery, melt-in-your-mouth cookies that are perfect for any occasion. Whether you decorate them for holidays, parties, or simply enjoy them as they are, these sugar cookies are sure to bring smiles to faces. So, gather your ingredients, preheat your oven, and embark on a baking adventure that will fill your home with the irresistible aroma and sweetness of homemade sugar cookies.
