Viral Matilda Cake Recipe: The Iconic Chocolate Layer Cake

The Matilda cake is an iconic, intensely chocolatey layer cake that has captured the imagination of dessert lovers worldwide. Made famous by the “Bruce Bogtrotter” scene in the 1996 film Matilda, where the character triumphantly devours a towering chocolate cake, this dessert is known for its rich, moist texture, deep chocolate flavour, and glossy fudge frosting. Its dramatic presentation and indulgent taste make it a show-stopping cake for celebrations, movie nights, or any chocolate craving.

Ingredients for Matilda Cake

For the chocolate sponge:

  • 250 g all-purpose flour
  • 75 g cocoa powder
  • 300 g sugar
  • 250 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 180 ml whole milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

For the fudge frosting:

  • 200 g unsalted butter
  • 200 g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 250 g powdered sugar
  • 60 ml whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For decoration:

  • Chocolate shavings or curls
  • Optional: berries or edible gold dust for a dramatic finish

How to Make Matilda Cake

  1. Prepare the oven and pans: Preheat your oven to 180°C. Grease and line two 20 cm round cake tins with parchment paper.
  2. Make the chocolate sponge: In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, adding vanilla extract. Sift together flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, alternating with milk, until smooth and well combined.
  3. Bake the layers: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake tins. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely in the tins before transferring to a wire rack.
  4. Prepare the fudge frosting: Melt butter and dark chocolate together in a heatproof bowl over simmering water or in short bursts in the microwave. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and glossy. Let it cool slightly before spreading.
  5. Assemble the cake: Place one sponge layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of fudge frosting evenly over the top. Place the second sponge layer on top and cover the cake entirely with the remaining frosting. Smooth or create textured swirls with a spatula for dramatic effect.
  6. Decorate: Finish with chocolate shavings, curls, or optional berries to mimic the cinematic indulgence of the original cake.

Tips for a Perfect Matilda Cake

  • Ensure butter and eggs are at room temperature for a smooth, airy sponge.
  • Avoid overmixing after adding flour to keep the cake light.
  • Cool the sponge completely before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Use high-quality dark chocolate for a rich, intense flavour.
  • For added drama, pipe extra frosting or create a textured, glossy finish with a spatula.

The Matilda cake is more than a dessert—it’s a celebration of chocolate indulgence and nostalgia. Its moist, chocolate-packed layers and glossy fudge frosting make it a showpiece for any occasion, bringing both taste and theatre to the table. Recreate this iconic cake at home to enjoy a slice of cinematic history that’s as rich and indulgent as it is memorable.
