Coffee and liquor are a match made in heaven. Whether it’s the bold bitterness of coffee enhancing the complexity of a classic cocktail or the comforting warmth of a spiked hot brew, these drinks are perfect for any occasion. From the ever-popular espresso martini to creative twists on beloved classics, here are five essential coffee cocktails to elevate your mixology skills.

1. Cold Brew Negroni

This herbal, bitter, and balanced drink combines two timeless favorites: cold brew coffee and the Negroni. If you already have cold brew in the fridge and the standard Negroni ingredients—sweet vermouth, Campari, and gin—you’re just a stir away from a smooth, sophisticated cocktail.

Ingredients:

  • 25 ml gin
  • 25 ml Campari
  • 25 ml sweet vermouth
  • 25 ml cold brew coffee
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange peel, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice and add the gin, Campari, sweet vermouth, and cold brew coffee.
  2. Stir well until chilled.
  3. Strain into a rocks glass over ice.
  4. Garnish with an orange peel and enjoy.

2. White Russian

A classic cocktail that rose to fame thanks to The Big Lebowski, the White Russian is creamy, indulgent, and easy to make. This drink is perfect for those who love a sweet, coffee-forward treat with a boozy kick.

Ingredients:

  • 50 ml vodka
  • 25 ml coffee liqueur (such as Kahlúa)
  • 25 ml heavy cream or milk
  • Ice cubes

Instructions:

  1. Fill a short glass with ice.
  2. Pour in the vodka and coffee liqueur.
  3. Slowly pour the cream over the back of a spoon to create a layered effect.
  4. Stir gently before drinking.

3. The Dead Rabbit’s Irish Coffee

Named after one of the world’s best bars, this version of Irish Coffee is a perfect blend of whiskey, coffee, and cream, best served piping hot. Follow the precise measurements to get the best flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 40 ml Irish whiskey
  • 120 ml freshly brewed hot coffee (about 75°C)
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 25 ml lightly whipped cream

Instructions:

  1. Add the whiskey and brown sugar to a warm glass or mug.
  2. Pour in the hot coffee and stir to dissolve the sugar.
  3. Gently float the whipped cream on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon.
  4. Do not stir—sip through the cream for the best experience.

4. Espresso Martini

This sophisticated cocktail is one of the most popular coffee drinks in the world. While an espresso machine is ideal, you can use cold brew concentrate as a substitute.

Ingredients:

  • 50 ml vodka
  • 25 ml coffee liqueur
  • 25 ml fresh espresso (or 25 ml cold brew concentrate)
  • 10 ml simple syrup (optional, for sweetness)
  • Ice cubes
  • Coffee beans, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso, and simple syrup.
  2. Shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds to create a creamy texture.
  3. Strain into a chilled martini glass.
  4. Garnish with three coffee beans and serve.

5. Dirty Chai Toddy

This warm and spiced cocktail brings together chai, espresso, and bourbon for a bold and aromatic drink that’s perfect for cold nights.

Ingredients:

  • 100 ml brewed chai tea
  • 30 ml espresso
  • 40 ml bourbon
  • 15 ml honey or maple syrup
  • 25 ml half-and-half (or whole milk)

Instructions:

  1. Brew a strong chai tea and pour it into a heatproof glass or mug.
  2. Stir in honey or maple syrup until dissolved.
  3. Add bourbon and espresso.
  4. Top with half-and-half and stir gently.
  5. Garnish with a cinnamon stick if desired.

Cheers to Coffee Cocktails!

Whether you prefer a chilled espresso martini or a cozy Irish coffee, these five drinks highlight the best of coffee and liquor. Next time you’re craving a caffeine-kicked cocktail, give one of these a try!
