If it’s vacuum-packed, it might appear purpler due to the lack of oxygen, which is normal. Pork should be pink and slightly marbled, while chicken should be pinkish, not grey or translucent. Always look at the expiry date on the packaging. Even if the meat looks and smells fine, it could be on the brink of spoiling if it’s near or past this date.

6. Buy from Reputable Sources

Purchasing meat from reputable butchers or stores with high turnover rates ensures that the products are fresher due to the constant restocking. Ask your butcher about the source of the meat; locally sourced meat is often fresher.

7. Consider the Temperature

Make sure the meat is stored at the correct temperature. In a store, meat should be in a refrigerated case or freezer. If the meat is not cold to the touch or if the refrigeration unit doesn’t seem to be working properly, don’t buy it.

8. Use Your Judgment

Ultimately, using your judgment based on appearance, smell, and feel is the best guide. If something seems off, choose a different product or store.
