How to Make the Perfect Iced Matcha Latte

Iced matcha lattes have become a favorite beverage for their vibrant green color, smooth texture, and subtle earthy sweetness. Making one at home allows you to control the sweetness, strength, and creaminess, delivering a refreshing drink that rivals coffee shop versions. The key is using high-quality matcha, proper whisking techniques, and balancing milk and sweetener to your taste.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp ceremonial or culinary-grade matcha powder
  • 60 ml hot water (not boiling)
  • 200–250 ml milk of choice (dairy, oat, almond, or soy)
  • Sweetener to taste (simple syrup, honey, or maple syrup)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

Step 1: Sift the Matcha
Sift the matcha powder into a bowl or cup to remove clumps. This step ensures a smooth, lump-free latte and makes whisking easier.

Step 2: Whisk with Hot Water
Add hot water (around 70–80°C) to the matcha. Use a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small regular whisk to mix the powder into a smooth, frothy liquid. Whisk in a zigzag motion until a thin layer of foam forms on top.

Step 3: Prepare the Milk
Pour your chosen milk over ice in a tall glass. For a creamier latte, use whole milk or oat milk. You can also froth the milk for added texture.

Step 4: Combine Matcha and Milk
Pour the whisked matcha over the ice and milk. Stir gently to mix. Adjust sweetness by adding syrup, honey, or another preferred sweetener.

Step 5: Serve
Enjoy immediately. Optionally, top with a sprinkle of matcha powder or a few ice cubes for an extra refreshing touch.

Tips for the Perfect Iced Matcha Latte

  • Water Temperature: Avoid boiling water, as it can make matcha taste bitter.
  • Whisking Technique: Whisk quickly in a zigzag or “M” motion to create froth and break up clumps.
  • Quality Matcha: Higher-quality matcha will have a vibrant green color and smooth taste; lower-quality matcha may be bitter.
  • Sweetener Choices: Use liquid sweeteners like syrup for even mixing; powders like sugar may not dissolve well in cold milk.
  • Milk Variations: Non-dairy milks like oat or almond provide natural sweetness and creaminess, while dairy milk gives a richer texture.

Variations

  • Vanilla Iced Matcha Latte: Add ½ tsp vanilla extract for a sweet, aromatic flavor.
  • Coconut Iced Matcha Latte: Use coconut milk and a dash of coconut syrup for a tropical twist.
  • Mocha Matcha Latte: Stir in a small spoon of cocoa powder or chocolate syrup for a chocolatey version.
  • Protein Matcha Latte: Blend in a scoop of vanilla or unflavored protein powder for a nourishing, energizing drink.

Making the perfect iced matcha latte at home is simple when you focus on quality ingredients, proper whisking, and the right balance of milk and sweetener. This vibrant, refreshing drink is versatile and can be customized with flavors or alternative milks to suit your taste. With a few careful steps, you can enjoy a creamy, energizing iced matcha latte any time, without leaving your kitchen.
