Frikkadels, often referred to as Danish meatballs, are a beloved dish that brings together flavors of comfort and tradition. Originating from Denmark, these meatballs are typically made with a mixture of pork and beef, seasoned with herbs, and served with a creamy gravy or a tangy sauce. Here’s a delightful Frikkadels recipe that will transport your taste buds to Scandinavia.

Ingredients:

  • Ground Pork: 1 lb (450g)
  • Ground Beef: 1 lb (450g)
  • Onion: 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Egg: 1 large
  • Breadcrumbs: 1/2 cup
  • Milk: 1/4 cup
  • Fresh Parsley: 2 tablespoons, finely chopped
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Black Pepper: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Nutmeg: 1/4 teaspoon (optional, for extra flavor)
  • Butter or Oil: for frying

For the Sauce (optional):

  • Beef or Chicken Broth: 1 cup
  • Heavy Cream: 1/2 cup
  • Cornstarch: 1 tablespoon (dissolved in 2 tablespoons of water)
  • Salt and Pepper: to taste

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Meatball Mixture

  1. In a small bowl, soak the breadcrumbs in milk until softened.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, ground beef, chopped onion, egg, soaked breadcrumbs (squeeze out excess milk), chopped parsley, salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using).
  3. Mix the ingredients thoroughly with your hands until well combined.

Step 2: Shape the Frikkadels

  1. With damp hands, shape the meat mixture into small, round meatballs (about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter). Ensure they are evenly sized for consistent cooking.

Step 3: Cook the Frikkadels

  1. Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the meatballs in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  3. Cook the meatballs for about 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are browned on all sides and cooked through. You may need to adjust the cooking time based on the size of your meatballs.

Step 4: Make the Sauce (optional)

  1. If making a sauce, deglaze the skillet with beef or chicken broth, scraping up any browned bits.
  2. Stir in the heavy cream and bring to a simmer.
  3. Add the cornstarch slurry (cornstarch dissolved in water) to thicken the sauce, stirring constantly until desired consistency is reached.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

  1. Transfer the cooked Frikkadels to a serving platter.
  2. Pour the sauce over the meatballs or serve it on the side.
  3. Garnish with additional chopped parsley if desired.
  4. Serve hot alongside potatoes, rice, or crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce.

Tips for Perfect Frikkadels:

  • Mixing Technique: Ensure the meatball mixture is thoroughly mixed but avoid overmixing, as this can result in tough meatballs.
  • Cooking Time: Check the internal temperature of the meatballs with a meat thermometer; they should reach 160°F (71°C) to ensure they are fully cooked.
  • Variations: Feel free to customize the seasonings and herbs based on your taste preferences. Some recipes incorporate grated onion or garlic for extra flavor.

Frikkadels are a comforting and hearty dish that celebrates the flavors of Danish cuisine. Whether enjoyed as a main course or served as part of a buffet, these meatballs are sure to impress with their tender texture and savory taste. Perfect for family dinners or festive gatherings, Frikkadels offer a taste of Scandinavian culinary tradition that will leave you craving more. Embrace the warmth and richness of Danish flavors with this easy-to-follow Frikkadels recipe.
