Honey Butter Rolls Recipe

Soft, golden, and slightly sweet, honey butter rolls are a timeless addition to any meal. Their tender crumb and rich buttery flavor make them perfect for breakfast, dinner, or a special occasion. Making them at home may seem intimidating, but with the right ingredients and a little patience, you can achieve bakery-quality rolls without difficulty.

Ingredients

For the dough

  • 480 g all-purpose flour
  • 60 g sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 7 g instant yeast (1 packet)
  • 180 ml warm milk
  • 60 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp honey

For the topping

  • 30 g unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp honey

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the dough

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk, honey, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Add eggs, softened butter, and the yeast mixture.
  3. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes by hand or 5–6 minutes with a stand mixer, until smooth and elastic.

Step 2: First rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 3: Shape the rolls
Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place them in a greased 23×33 cm (9×13 inch) baking dish, leaving a small gap between each roll.

Step 4: Second rise
Cover the dish with a cloth and let the rolls rise for another 30–40 minutes, until puffy.

Step 5: Bake
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 6: Add the honey butter topping
While the rolls are still warm, brush them with melted butter mixed with honey. This adds shine, flavor, and a slight sweetness that complements the soft roll.

Tips for Perfect Honey Butter Rolls

  • Warm liquids: Ensure milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast without killing it.
  • Kneading: Proper kneading develops gluten, giving soft, fluffy rolls.
  • Rising: Allow enough time for the dough to double in size; rushing this step affects texture.
  • Variations: Sprinkle with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or cinnamon sugar before baking for added flavor.
