8 Ways To Check If You Buying Fresh Meat Products When Shopping In South Africa

Purchasing fresh meat is crucial for both the taste of your dishes and your health. In South Africa, with its rich tradition of braais and diverse cuisines, knowing how to select the freshest meat products is essential. Here are several tips to help ensure that the meat you buy is fresh and of high quality.

1. Check the Colour

The colour of meat can be a strong indicator of its freshness. Beef should have a bright cherry-red hue when fresh. If it’s vacuum-packed, it might appear purpler due to the lack of oxygen, which is normal. Pork should be pink and slightly marbled, while chicken should be pinkish, not grey or translucent. Any sign of discoloration could indicate that the meat is past its prime.

2. Smell the Meat

Fresh meat should have a mild, not unpleasant, smell. If the meat smells sour, strong, or off in any way, it’s likely not fresh. Trust your nose; if something smells bad, it probably is.

3. Inspect the Packaging

Ensure the packaging is intact with no tears, holes, or excessive liquid. The meat’s juices should be minimal, and the package should not be puffed up with air, as this could indicate bacterial growth.

4. Touch the Meat

If possible, feel the meat. It should be firm, not slimy or sticky. Any slime on the surface is a telltale sign that the meat is beginning to spoil.

5. Check the Expiry Date

Always look at the expiry date on the packaging. Even if the meat looks and smells fine, it could be on the brink of spoiling if it’s near or past this date.

6. Buy from Reputable Sources

Purchasing meat from reputable butchers or stores with high turnover rates ensures that the products are fresher due to the constant restocking. Ask your butcher about the source of the meat; locally sourced meat is often fresher.

7. Consider the Temperature

Make sure the meat is stored at the correct temperature. In a store, meat should be in a refrigerated case or freezer. If the meat is not cold to the touch or if the refrigeration unit doesn’t seem to be working properly, don’t buy it.

8. Use Your Judgment

Ultimately, using your judgment based on appearance, smell, and feel is the best guide. If something seems off, choose a different product or store.

Following these tips can help you ensure that you’re buying fresh, high-quality meat in South Africa. Remember, the freshness of meat not only affects the flavor and safety of your meals but also supports your overall health and well-being.
